The Final Echo

Our "Echoes of Thracia" campaign recently came to an end in the grand finale, fought out between sixteen brave generals in two alliances. This was all-out miniature warfare for the fate of the feudal city of Thracia Rex, held by the bitter Iron Warrior Traitors and besieged by an armoured Loyalist onslaught of the Iron Hands.

The campaign day was divided into three separate "theatres" interacting between each other. The grand siege was at the heart of it all, and all eyes were following the battle prowess of the fighting 6000 point forces of Iron Hands and Iron Warriors, earning the clash the moniker "Crucible of Iron". Imperial attackers were attempting to storm the city walls from their trench positions, crossing the deadly minefield and other traps set by the Iron Warriors.

Specific "Pioneer" troops on both sides had the opportunity to physically affect the battlefield - Loyalist forces were early on hard at work to extend their trench network as well as constructing the Legendary Thracian Siege Engine "Ombro" to help bring the walls down. Traitors on the other hand were constructing additional traps - rebuilding their fear-inducing frontline bunkers and installing Thracian relics of their own - the menacing Antimatter Mines.

Supporting them were the eight generals in the Battleline missions, tasked with finding every ounce of resources still left in the Thracian system they could help their siege brethren with. They went after every objective token marked as either Ammunition, Fuel, Medical Supplies or Construction Materiel, supplying siege fighters with vital assets whenever a point was scored. The siege efforts were very much dependent on these successes, as no reserves could be brought in without Fuel Tokens, and all heavy weapons had the Limited Ammunition rule only removed with spare Ammo Tokens at the players' disposal.

Far from the despair that was the siege operated the special forces, hand-picked elite units sent to perform surgical missions with diminishing numbers. They went to conquer long-range Scorpius missile systems, to sabotage Thracia Rex's Void Shield power generators and to investigate a massive threat to both sides - a weaponized fusion reactor strapped to an automated bullet train on an infinite loop across Thracia's vast railway networks. Having simultaneously intercepted the same intel describing the fast-moving payload, the SpecOps units hurried to catch the bomb train and to do battle for its route control - two possible end terminals being the Traitor-controlled city of Thracia Rex, and the main Loyalist landing zone, coordinating all of their war efforts on the planet.

In the gloomy caverns and tunnels underneath Thracia Rex, heavy Iron Warrior infantry made way to gain control of the subterranean realm. Making short work of Iron Hand infiltrators, the IV Legion was able to open many secret passages to the no man's land above. As the Traitor Battleline performed with amazing effect, supplying the Iron Warrior reserves with a multitude of Fuel Resources, a daring company of trench raiders was formed out of Cataphractii Terminators as well as Tyrant Siege Terminators and the infamous Dominators. Storming from the hidden tunnel hatches the Terminators caught Loyalist besiegers off-guard, wiping out many units at instant in their surprise attack. It was only the challenging, ordnance-ridden ground that just crucially slowed the Terminator shock assault down, enabling Iron Hands to regroup and ultimately defeat the onslaught. This left them behind their siege schedule however, as due to the defensive maneuvers taken very little work had been managed in extending the Imperial trench network or defusing His Excellence's Mine Garden.

The overwhelming numbers of the Iron Hand invaders were finally able to claw their way over the no-man's-land through sheer willpower, and they were also reinforced by a contingent of Thracian Feudal Militia, sparking an insurrection in the city under the Iron Warriors' stern grip. With the completion of the legendary Thracian Siege Engine Ombro, endless salvoes begun to hammer the Wall of Barbadus, joined by a choir of siege tanks and other long range artillery.

Meanwhile the Special Forces had made an alarming discovery in remote catacombs - the sinister forces of High Chaplain Erebus had been discovered on Thracia Rex and the Word Bearers supported by newly-summoned daemon entities had waged war against both sides. It became apparent that the bomb train was actually a scheme put into play by power-hungry Erebus himself. As the surviving units emerged from the catacombs and hurried to join their battle-brothers in order to share the recent developments with them, the train reached the fateful intersection - it was the Loyalists who had the upper hand. Despite learning of the heretic treacheries, the stern Imperial Fists were characteristically unable to act against their original orders, and sent the train along with its deadly cargo to Thracia Rex.

Doom and death shattered the feudal city and thousands of lives were lost in an eyeblink. Hence Erebus's powers grew - the daemonic entities feasted on the lost souls and a massive tear in reality appeared in Thracia Rex's suburbs. Iron Warrior defenses on the Wall of Barbadus suffered massive damage from the bomb tremors, and as the final fire missions by the Iron Hand tanks were enacted, the colossal fortification came crashing down. The Loyalists had made the breach.

The board was now set and all pieces were in motion for the final push. All Special Forces directed their march routes to Erebus's location, joining forces to stop the heretical ritual and save Thracia from becoming a daemon world. The Iron Hands attempted to storm the demolished wall and to conquer the city streets, with their warlord personally assaulting the 18th Keep on top of the massive Siege Engine. The remaining Battleline forces formed hasty alliances and charged to activate final assets - booby-trapped resource tokens and two great weapons - a continental Atomantic Missile Silo and the hibernating Warhound Titan, The Sentinel of Hell Sinai.

Ultimately the forces of the Warmaster were able to take control of both the Atomantic Missile and the Titan, further reinforcing the spirit of their Iron Warrior siege specialists. The determined IV Legion was able to thwart the Iron Hands advance, as their armoured reserves, newly-installed Thracian Antimatter Mines and dominant control over the subterranean pathways proved too much for the Loyalists to take on. The final X Legion charge spearheaded by Contemptor Dreadnoughts and Legion Automata came short, halting just outside the breached walls of Thracia Rex.

Over at the ritual site the uneasy alliance between Loyal and Traitor Special Forces was honoured (more or less) and the combined arms were able to take control of all of Erebus's six warp portals, crucially sealing them shut. In the dying moments of the battle it was a Sons of Horus Assault Marine sergeant who delivered the final blow against the High Chaplain himself, forcing Erebus's retreat from the Thracian system for good.

Thracia Rex laid in ruins. The Loyalists had been unsuccessful in driving the Traitor presence back and the icons of the Warmaster still flew over the remains of the feudal city, vexatiously binding remaining Loyalists to the sector for a prolonged time. With their domain brought low, Traitors could only regroup and cower in wait for new orders. What would later develop into months and years of guerilla operations and splintered positional war was now hard to be seen as a sound victory for either allegiance. Erebus and his daemonic allies had however been banished - a triumph for the denizens of the feudal world, although quite possibly unrecognized by themselves.

The collective hobby spirit of our great Horus Heresy scene is what drives these projects and we're privileged to be able to share these experiences with you all. We hope this adventure created together has sparked new projects in character and unit additions, and possibly in completely new army concepts - there's nothing like events that make things happen on the painting desk! The campaign finale was a significant push from our event team in story writing, scenario planning and the terrain & accessories workshop, filling the calendar of the first annual quarter completely - a brief respite is now in order. Massive thanks to all of our players and participants of all five Echoes of Thracia campaign acts!

Civil War VI Results and Coverage

 Incoming Transmission...

War Head Civil War, the shining beacon in our annual calendar, is again behind us for another year. This one must have been the best one yet, as everyone was really pushing themselves creatively and artistically to produce amazing secret army projects for the occasion, and the battles had a good flow to them thanks to the refined scenarios. Our collective effort also made sure that the Civil War army building values of out-of-the-box thinking, the rule of cool and anti-competitive choices were in the limelight through the weekend. You can find this year's event rules as well as the scenarios and special features here.

This pic is a little teaser of the landing zone, right after we had all taken turns describing our new forces, revealing a surprise unit after another for others to freak out about and marvel at. We look forward to this moment all year and it is at least as important as all the following games combined. Assembling a new force is often quite labour-intensive especially during the last few weeks leading up to the big day, but the shared sense of hobby thrill at this very moment is most addictive and rather emotional. It's the pinnacle of the hobby for us.

The Civil War format includes a change of dynamics each round, as the games are played as 1v1, 2v2 and 4-player compositions. You kind of get to learn the ropes of the new roster in the first clash, and then take those teachings to the multiplayer fields, co-operating and politicizing in the middle of permanent and temporary alliances. This is also a neat social hook - sharing the table with several friends is one of the keys to the gaming madness we're looking to achieve.

The sweet photography coverage for this year was courtesy of Manel @mp_miniatures, who joined us for our traditional hobby celebration all the way from Barcelona! Stay tuned for the full model gallery here and on War Head Instagram!

Civil War Rising

It's the Civil War season and the big day is a mere month away! Our annual "main event" for War Head crew's internal bragging rights and shared hobby inspiration is played on Saturday 28th of September. The occasion is very much already messing with our heads - is there enough time to prepare all the secret schemes, what wicked plans others might be cooking, and how are the exciting games going to unfold as it's finally time to deploy?

The Civil War event pack including the Patrol army building rules, scenarios and multiplayer special features are described below in the Civil War VI Player Primer - we encourage everyone to try out the compact "grassroots skirmishing" with compressed Horus Heresy rosters in good company! We've quite enjoyed the low threshold it introduces to building new, thematic armies in a reasonable timeframe, as well as the refreshing scale of patrol gaming where the Tactical Marine is the king.

Breaching the Rock - The Invasion of Fulgur

I still catch myself thinking back on the massive SN Battle Reports: No Retreat V experience we had a couple of weeks ago, enjoying the hobby and tabletop gaming in its ultimate form! The five Horus Heresy battles against magnificent armies on a luxury yacht sparked a proper gaming flame for the summertime and I can't wait to get back to the workshop desk for some new army and event schemes. The friendly discussions, inspiration and recognition will fuel these aspirations for a long time - the War Head World Eaters were commended with a SN Award (TOP5 exemplary Horus Heresy armies chosen by the event team) and with the Best Army Award (as voted by the participants). My big thanks for all the kind feedback, army votes and brilliant hobby chatter go to all of the skilled co-participants, hardworking event staff and the esteemed judge panel! This is a world class event with so much thought and effort going into it, and also seems to attract the best kind of people as participants.

My 3000 point army shared a lot with the previous iterations when it comes to the theme and playstyle, but it had been updated with many new units and additional XII Legion Culture. To complement the Jump Pack onslaught I added some skirmish elements, proving useful for countering Infiltration and providing me with an option of dividing the attack force into separate Deep Strike and Outflank detachments. I'd also completely redone the list's workhorse Red Butchers unit, retiring the Forge World models with new personalized scratchbuild conversions. There were also many narrative story hooks hidden within the modelling work and split between this main list and the optional one for Zone Mortalis games. More on these later!

Battle 1: Alpha Legion Headhunter Leviathal

My first go against the Alpha Legion resulted in a tense deployment period as I was trying my best to avoid Headhunter infiltration wiping out my ground forces before the cavalry had a chance to arrive! I tried to block precision shots to the back lines with Recon Marine counter-infiltration which worked ok and bought the necessary time. Just as I had rolled my initial deep strike scatter a narrative event put a massive spin on the game - Horus' fleet was performing electronical jamming and all my opponent's Augury Scanners and Intercepting was turned off (as well as any following deep strikes scattering an additional dice). This left poor Jason's army completely at the World Eaters' mercy and I was able to wipe out most of the Alpha Legion board presence. The rival Dawnbreakers and Assault Marines arrived and performed a valiant counter-strike, but there was no recovering from the Kill Point deficit suffered on the initial onslaught. Jason took the misfortunes like a champ though and we had a good chat about our armies, tactics and the hobby in general.

Battle 2: The Primarch of the Imperial Fists

A rock-hard Imperial Fists Phalanx was led by Dorn himself in a scenario where three midfield objectives were used for progressive scoring. All Imperial Fist units were so incredibly robust that I found no easy targets, deciding early on to go for Line hunting. In the initial drop I was able to remove one Tactical horde and the Praetor's Command Squad, but made a mistake destroying the Spartan instead of the more mobile Leviathan that proved harmful later on. The Imperial Fists struck back, wiping out many of my elite units but left me in a position to kill off the last hostile Tactical Marines on my following turn. The maneuvers were done in very close quarters however and as I tried to reach the charge ranges Rogal Dorn stepped out, using the advanced reaction and clipping the wings of my ambitions. It finally took a long charge from the Huscarls to remove the World Eater Rampagers from another objective and the VII stood victorious with a couple points' margin. Fun, eventful and friendly game and it felt that with a bit better playing on my part the World Eaters could've gone for a result even facing the Sire of the Imperial Fists himself!

Battle 3: Dark Angels Castellans

Incredibly stylish and thematic Dark Angels deployed in a fortified battlefield third that also hosted all of the five objectives, setting up a defensive perimeter around their castle. This game saw waves of foul traitors crash against the knightly defenses in an epic and bloody contest, with the World Eaters gaining the upper hand thanks to fortunate rolling on the randomized victory points, leaving burnt objectives in their wake. While I made short work of the First Legion's scoring capacity, the intercepting Melta Leviathan was absolutely terrifying and Corswain with his Companions refused to give any quarter protecting their central keep. The game naturally concluded in the duel of the Warlords, with the Paladin of the Ninth Order beheading my Warmonger with ease. Splendid game against a most gentlemanly opponent, who also got my vote for the Players' Player award.

Battle 4: White Scars Chogorian Brotherhood

A rematch against Tim from No Retreat III - and a table full of eye candy in his magnificent White Scars. The scenario was a challenging one for my reserve based list, as we scored points from table segments at the beginning of our turns. Thinking back I probably should have kept some of the Jump Infantry on board to keep Tim on his toes, but lacking the experience decided to drop most of it. White Scars took the field and went way ahead in points, with World Eaters arriving late and attempting to mount a comeback. Turns two and three were absolutely brutal with most of the White Scars' strength swept off the board in a true Traitor shock assault, but Tim's masterful playing made sure I didn't really shake his faith in victory. The Rhinos were a menace once again, blocking movement and driving some of my units back, an absolute steal for their points value! Tim's special Destroyers hunted down my Outflanking scoring elements which meant that I couldn't complete the VP sprint in the end - the Loyal Scum ultimately took the game by a couple of points. Great study in sharp and calculative Heresy again, I'm always up for another lesson!

Battle 5: Raven Guard, Host of the Shadowed Lord

The Raven Guard had an absolutely terrifying list with a murderous Corax + Dark Talons Deathstar, but absolutely superb gaming conduct to perfectly balance things out. Playing the Primarch in a rather reserved way Steve let me into the game and even after my disordered Deep Strike graciously placed my entire army in a way that we managed to have a proper scrap in the end. I had great time trying to conquer the battlefield center, watching Corax wreck my entire flank and backline and learning about the background story of the Deliverers, who proved to be more than worthy opponents for the many World Eater elites. Thanks to my list's mobility and Steven's gentlemanly attitude I managed to claw my way into a narrow victory in the end after triumphing against Raven Guard's MVP Tactical Marines on the final turn. What a fitting way to end the terrific wargaming weekend!

All of the games were quite evenly matched and I felt great using the newly-finished roster. I'll be tinkering with the Troops side of the list going forward, but I think most of the list is nailed down for the time being. With Ropecon's Show of Force and War Head's Civil War event in the distant horizon, it'll be a busy Summer!

No Retreat, no surrender!

The feed here has been on a bit of a hiatus as I've been buried in the preparations for the No Retreat Horus Heresy event by SN Battle Reports, the spectacular international gaming experience and  hobby holiday like no other. Now returning from the adventure it's time for debriefing and musings with another intense hobby marathon coming to a close - our time spent on the luxury yacht rolling dice, marveling at painting prowess and meeting incredible artists from around the globe have all left a deep sense of gratitude.

My sincere thanks go to the tireless team of SN Battle Reports who not only prepared a world-class venue, incredible story narrative and interesting mission pack for gaming, but also arranged swag bags, sightseeing tours, a sculpting masterclass as well as BBQ and dinners for us to enjoy. They went out of their way to look after our every need in a proper five star hobby and gaming paradise.

The team is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year and have already left a lasting mark on the international scene that I feel simply wouldn't be the same without their efforts. The inspiration, challenge and camaraderie the event provides is simply brilliant and the manner it leads the way in putting the hobby first is something that is very close to our hearts.

Massive thanks belong to the participants as well, arriving to the venue and instantly making a bunch of like-minded friends is so cool! The army parade on Sunday was a thrilling sight and sparked inspiration for so many projects and schemes. Well done everyone, big thanks for all of your hard work and hope to meet you again!

One cannot forget the home front either - the laborer's long hours spent hunched over the painting desk have surely been felt at home. Thanks Nelli for your patience and understanding in creating this adventure and joining us on it in the end!

The reportage and descriptions on the World Eater adventures coming soon!

Echoes of Thracia, Act IV Visual Coverage

As the mighty relics recovered from the Thracian system have seen battle, their essence and abilities have grown ever stronger. During the ongoing conflict the artifacts have also changed hands between warlords as tokens of gratitude, aid deliveries or battlefield loot, and their gifts have been enjoyed by many.

Although some Legion Esoterists have delved deep into investigations regarding the history of Thracia Rex and the ancient relics recovered from its surface, their findings have been made too late. Raw powers of the Immaterium pulsate deceivingly within the artifacts, affecting the mind and very soul of the warriors in their vicinity. Ultimately this has led to some new splinter detachments of former Loyalists joining the Warmaster’s cause.

The near space of Thracia Rex’s Crown World has now been invaded, and Loyalist and Traitor fleets battle for control of the stratosphere. The awaited planetfall is only a matter of days and the desired bridgehead positions are already being drawn by the Legion specialists.

With the campaign entering its closing stages, trust is at its most fragile state…

Xmas Friendly Fire!

Time to wrap up the War Head gaming season! This year we made our way back into the tournament scene after the pandemic break, reassembling our terrain reserve and inviting players back to the battlefields of the 41st and 31st Millennia! The focus was firmly on casual, narrative gaming with the Echoes of Thracia campaign expanding on the story started by ourselves in the in-house Thracian Insurgency games. It's been incredibly rewarding to arrange events for such enthusiastic players - the best reward for the organizer is the great interest in the form of rapid sign-ups whenever a new event is announced. Our thanks go to all of our great and skilled event participants throughout the hobby year of 2023!

Civil War Igniting

New, secret forces are taking shap
The big one is coming - War Head Civil War will be played in two weeks' time! It's one of our dearest wargaming traditions and the invitational event for our inner circle has always made amazing hobby memories. Civil War is one of those events where the journey is as important as the destination; everyone is currently painting secret additions to their army - or perhaps creating a new force for the occasion entirely! What's certain is that it will be superbly exciting to gather and see what everyone has come up with and then play for the annual bragging rights.

Our format this year is Horus Heresy Patrols, fashioned after the example of the classic "40K in 40 minutes" rules - 500 point lists with the toughest characters and heavier assets restricted. Three rounds will be played, a single game as 1v1, another as 2v2 and finally four player Carnage free-for-alls. Each round will provide a new layer of gameplay flavour and social interaction. Can't wait.

40K Oaths of the Moment Results and Coverage

Back at it again! The battlefields were assembled for some fierce 40K warfare today after the long hiatus, as we hosted a casual three-round event for eight valiant combatants. It was our first tournament for the ninth edition after the pandemic break and the reassembly of our terrain reserve and it was sweet to meet the players again after a long while. WTC Team Member Aleksi Lehtiö was kind enough to lend us a hand with the arrangements and was an invaluable consultant when it came to creating the modern tournament rules package. Cheers Aku!
